"THE DEAD STORM BRITAIN" Melody Maker Magazine

This is a difficult show to score. Both audience sources archived here are extremely poor in sound quality, rendering both transfers virtually unlistenable. Perhaps due to Wembley being a "chilly, cavernous sports facility" this performance is not of the same caliber as many of the subsequent performances. But despite it's rather poor reputation, the music available from vault reel sources is excellent, particularly the jam suite on disk three of the Steppin' Out release.

The first set is unremarkable, with the exception of a well played China/Rider. The second set kicks off with an excellent performance of Truckin' that includes a very nice Garcia solo. After a drum break, it segues into a superb Other One featuring a brief Me and My Uncle Jam and a very nice melodic space segment. The reprise gets quite jazzy and there is some marvelous interplay between Jerry and Keith before the second verse.

Athough quite a few of the following shows on the tour feature more spectacular performances of The Other One, this one is certainly worthy of its inclusion on the official release.
(92 pts*)

*If this performance was released in its entirety from vault reel masters it would garner a score in the mid-nineties!

Thanx SirMick. I appreciate the Flac DLs a whole bunch. This knight makes life better. That being said, this is a tennis match of sounds. Both sides of the net take their tunes with the sound. You get some stellar rough patches, mixed with what 20 years ago would have made a great old recording. Going after Pigpen here, so I echo the fine folks previous. Peace

I agree with Brad that you gotta do what you can to complete the Europe '72 run, even though this is a curiosity at best in terms of sound. However, "Steppin' Out" now captures the highlight of the second set, and David Lemieux has been releasing board versions of several tunes from this show on www.dead.net in the taper's section. Between those and this muddy but listenable copy I have the whole show.

Like I said before, this is absolutely the worst recording I've ever heard. But, in order to complete my Euro '72 collection, I've gotta do what I gotta do. Do your ears a service & wait until a listenable source unearths.

Notes

This is a remaster of shnid 6161.

This show is compiled from two aud masters, one which is no better than average sound and the other which is horrendous. I like a challenge so I thought I'd see what I could do, after all this show is from the golden year of 1972. The year when I stepped on the bus!

The worst tape supplies Greatest Story through Loser and Truckin' 8:30 through The Other One 9:24. The first section was easier than expected to get a better than hoped improvement from and is now very listenable. The second section was more problematic, but sounds less disastrous than it was. The other source now has a better sound. Whilst this will never be an audiophiles' dream, you can now, for the most part, get a better appreciation of the music. It is a very good show.
